Search Intensity, Cost of Living and Local Labor Markets in England∗

چکیده
A model is considered in which optimal search intensity is a result of a trade off between short run losses due to higher search costs (more interviews, commuting...) and long-run gains due to a higher chance of finding a job. We show that this optimal search intensity is higher in areas characterized by larger cost of living and/or higher labor market tightness. We then test this model using county-level data in England for the period 1991-2000. As predicted by the theoretical model, both the (county) cost of living and the (county) labor market tightness are found to have a positive and significant effect on the (county) search intensity.

متن کاملThe Effect of Local Labor Markets on College Enrollment
A number of authors have investigated whether aggregate and! or local labor market conditions affect college enrollment, hut the results across studies are very inconsistent. There are two shortcomings in the previous studies that may explain the weak correlation between labor market opportunities and college enrollment. First, we will use the unique structure of the HS & B to construct unemplo...
متن کاملHow Local Are Labor Markets?: Evidence from a Spatial Job Search Model
We use data at the Census ward level to investigate the extent to which labor markets are ‘local’. We present some non-structural estimates in which the probability of filling a vacancy is influenced by unemployment and vacancies in the surrounding areas, but we argue that these estimates cannot adequately estimate the true cost of distance. We then present a simple model of job-search across s...

متن کاملEPQ model with depreciation cost and process quality cost as continuous functions of time
Extensive research has been devoted to economic production quantity (EPQ) problem. However, little atten-tion has been paid to problems where depreciation cost and process quality cost must be considered, simulta-neously. In this paper, we consider the economic production quantity model of minimizing the annual total cost subject to depreciation cost and process quality cost, where depreciation...
